Google was established as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin as Ph.D. students at Stanford University in California in January 1996. It became one of the world’s dominant forces online; its name even became a verb!

Google was named after googols – mathematical terms with 100 zeros – to emphasize the vast amount of information it would filter through. Since its creation, it has become one of the world’s most-used search engines and even entered English verbiage as an object of use. Today it forms part of Alphabet and provides services like YouTube, Android, and G Suite cloud computing.

In August 2015, Alphabet Inc was formed as a holding company, keeping its core Internet search and advertising businesses together while other projects like the self-driving car project Google X became separate entities under Alphabet; Sundar Pichai became CEO of Alphabet while Page and Brin reassumed their roles at Google.
