Peradeniya Botanical Garden

Peradeniya botanical garden has more than 200 species of palm trees, most of which originated in Seychelles. The Double coconut, for example, originated in Seychelles and produced the world’s largest seed. It can weigh up to 18 kg. Visitors will find Double coconut trees along the main road, which branches off the main central drive and gate.

Initially, the Peradeniya Botanical Garden was a pleasure garden for the Kandyan king. King Wikramabahu first kept the court in Peradeniya near the Mahaweli River in 1371. The garden was also used during the reign of King Kirthi Sri, and the temporary residences were constructed under Rajadhi Rajasinghe in 1780-1789. Later, the garden became a headquarters for the Allied forces in South-East Asia during the Second World War. In 2018, it was named one of the world’s ten best botanical gardens.
